Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) represent a cutting-edge solution for industrial automation, particularly in material handling. While many existing AMRs prioritize functionality, they often overlook how industrial and aesthetic design can enhance their performance. Our mission was to develop an AMR where industrial design and functionality are seamlessly integrated, ensuring that aesthetics not only complement but also elevate the robot’s operational efficiency.
Designing Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) presents three significant challenges: first, Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) features like e-stops, lights, and bumpers often extend beyond the robot’s footprint, compromising design coherence; second, essential components such as lidars, cameras, and sensors are typically placed for function without considering their integration into the overall design; and third, AMRs often lack effective communication with users, leaving nearby personnel unaware of the robot’s intentions. To address these issues, we have developed a ground-up design that prioritizes both aesthetics and functionality, leveraging the best practices in industrial design.
Our design concept centers on a Y-shaped form that incorporates HRI features and sensors while ensuring their accessibility and visibility. The sweeping shape, integrated within the robot’s rectangular footprint, houses operational lights, lidars, sensor fusion systems, and e-stops. This approach not only protects these critical components from collisions but also maintains their full functionality and visibility. Additionally, interactive HRI panels are securely enclosed, with clear instructions for users. The design style, blending hard surface and high-tech aesthetics, enhances both contextual congruency and manufacturability, resulting in an AMR that is both appealing and functional.
